When the need arises, it’s necessary to respond.
During his third-round game at the French Open, the umpire appeared to deny Australian tennis player Thanasi Kokkinakis a toilet break, leaving him confused.
Kokkinakis, who had briefly left the court after the first set, went to speak with chair umpire Katarzyna Radwan-Cho after losing the second set.
“He requested for a chance to succeed,” he informed her. “But now you’re informing me that I only have 50 seconds. Can you please be reasonable and provide me with something satisfactory for once?”
“F**king sh*t, we get two for a match,” he added, referencing the number of toilet breaks permitted in five setters. “Do you want me to p*ss on the court?
“Is this your desired outcome?”
Kokkinakis was eventually defeated by Russia’s Karen Khachanov in four sets. Khachanov came back from a 4-1 deficit in the fourth-set tiebreak to win the match and move on to the fourth round.
Retired British athlete Laura Robson, currently serving as a commentator for Eurosport, offered an explanation for why Kokkinakis may have faced difficulties in getting to and from the bathroom quickly.
“You need to run quickly, but the issue is that on the Simonne-Mathieu court, the bathrooms are not as conveniently located as they are on the Chatrier and Lenglen courts.”
He is visibly frustrated because he is attempting to reach his destination quickly, but it is physically impossible…at least it didn’t occur on the court.
