The London Metropolitan Police is looking into a potential hate crime following an attack and robbery against a young woman of Jewish descent.
A video of the event spread on the internet after being shared by the local safety organization Shomrim on Twitter.
According to the Metropolitan Police, a 20-year-old individual was robbed on Rostrevor Avenue in Stamford Hill, north London by two women at approximately 4:30pm on Thursday. The suspects fled towards the A10. The victim sustained bruising but did not require hospitalization.
Detective Mike Herrick is in charge of the investigation for the robbery division. He stated that the woman was extremely frightened and described the incident as shocking and terrifying. The victim was fortunate to have escaped with only minor injuries.
We recognize the significant emotional impact of these offenses and we are providing her with all necessary support as we strive to identify the individuals responsible.
“We are aware that the incident has been extensively circulated on social media and recognize that there may be increased apprehensions about the purpose of the attack. We remain unbiased in regards to the motive and will collaborate closely with the local community to ease any anxieties.”
The police department later verified that the victim is of Jewish faith. They posted on Twitter: “A video showing a young Jewish woman being violently attacked and robbed in Haringey yesterday has been circulating widely tonight.”
We will not be releasing the complete video, however, we can confirm that an inquiry has been initiated.
