A 14-year-old boy has been charged with attempted murder after a 13-year-old girl was stabbed in the neck, stomach, chest and back near Hull on Friday morning.

The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has also been charged with possession of a bladed article.

The young victim of the attack, which took place in the town of Hessle, East Yorkshire, was found with multiple lacerations to her body by members of the public at the side of the A63 dual carriageway, shortly before 7am on Friday.

She is in a serious but stable condition in hospital after suffering life-threatening injuries.

After officers attended the scene and conducted a search, three boys aged 15, 16 and 17 and two girls aged 14 and 15 were also arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in a wooded area nearby, in connection with the incident. All five have now been released from custody on police bail.

The 14-year-old boy charged with attempted murder has been remanded into custody to appear at Hull magistrates court on Monday 4 November.

On Friday, Det Supt Simon Vickers of Humberside police thanked members of the public who came to the aid of the girl and assisted her at the roadside before emergency services arrived.
