After defeating Emma Navarro in the San Diego Open, Katie Boulter promised to continue enjoying herself on the court as she progresses to her most significant final yet.

The British No 1, who claimed her first WTA Tour title on grass in Nottingham last summer, beat the New Yorker to book her place in the final of a WTA 500 tournament for the first time after a 6-3, 6-1 victory.

Boulter has had a successful start to the year and her win against her third top-30 opponent this week ensures that she will move up at least 14 spots in the rankings, reaching a career best of 35. A victory against Marta Kostyuk in the final on Sunday night could result in her breaking into the top 30. Her boyfriend, Alex de Minaur, who recently won the Acapulco title, has made arrangements to come and support her, even flying in early in the morning.

“Today’s game was one of those where everything fell into place,” Boulter stated. “When I stepped onto the court, I could immediately sense her strength and skill in controlling the ball.”

“I needed to devise a better strategy and be more assertive, taking risks instead of holding back. I believe this was the moment to have faith in myself and believe in the effort I have dedicated, and it proved successful. This is the largest final of my career thus far. I will continue to enjoy myself.”

The 27-year-old from Leicester dominated on her serve against Navarro, the third seed, winning more than 87% of first-serve points and allowing the American just two break points, both of which she saved. Rain stopped play early in the second set but the delay did nothing to halt Boulter’s momentum as she wrapped up victory in 74 minutes.

Boulter, who was not even in the top 100 rankings a year ago, mentioned that the rain delay during the match made it quite challenging.

“I sensed that I had the advantage on my side. During the rain delay, I placed a lot of stress on myself to remain concentrated and stay warmed up in order to maintain that advantage. I believe I started off with some solid playing and stayed in that groove, which was crucial for today’s match.”

Kostyuk is also having one of the best weeks of her career. The 21‑year‑old from Ukraine – ranked No 34 in the world – recovered from 5-1 down in the first set to stun the American top seed, Jessica Pegula, 7-6 (4), 6-1 and secure her first win against a top‑five player.
