The much-awaited action-packed adventure Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will debut at this year’s Cannes film festival.

George Miller, the director of the Academy Award-winning film Mad Max: Fury Road, has come back to the world of the movie with a new prequel. This prequel delves into the beginnings of the character Furiosa, previously portrayed by Charlize Theron. Anya Taylor-Joy takes on the role of Furiosa, with Chris Hemsworth also appearing in the film.

Miller stated that the concept for this prequel has been on his mind for more than ten years. He expressed his excitement to participate in the Cannes Festival once again, alongside Anya, Chris, and Tom Hardy, to showcase Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. He believes the perfect setting for this film’s debut is La Croisette, where it can be experienced by audiences on a global platform.

During the 2015 festival, Mad Max: Fury Road debuted and ultimately earned six Oscars and $380 million globally. According to Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian, the film was described as “excessively insane, deafeningly loud, and completely outrageous” in his critique.

After that, Miller introduced Three Thousand Years of Longing at the event. The film featured Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba in a fantasy drama.

Theron praised Taylor-Joy as “one of the most talented actresses” when discussing her taking on the role.

“This has been the most dirty and bloody experience I have ever had, and that’s saying a lot,” Taylor-Joy stated regarding the filming process.

The performer, known for their portrayals in The Queen’s Gambit, The Witch, and The Menu, will also star in Apple’s upcoming action romance film, The Gorge, alongside Miles Teller.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will screen out of competition at the festival, shortly before its theatrical release. The full line-up will be officially announced next month but speculation suggests new films from Jacques Audiard, Andrea Arnold and Francis Ford Coppola may be included. This year’s jury will be led by Greta Gerwig.
