Oppenheimer and Barbie have emerged as strong contenders for the upcoming Oscars after dominating the Critics Choice awards.

The highly successful films Barbie and Oppenheimer have been consistently recognized at the Critics Choice awards, indicating their strong chances for success at the upcoming Academy awards. Combined, the two films received a total of 14 awards, with Oppenheimer slightly surpassing Barbie with 8 wins to 6.

The headline awards were swept by Oppenheimer, taking home top honors for best picture and best director (Christopher Nolan). The film also received recognition for its acting ensemble, with Robert Downey Jr winning best supporting actor for his portrayal of Lewis Strauss, a member of the Atomic Energy Commission. In addition, Oppenheimer was honored for its technical aspects, such as cinematography, editing, and visual effects.

While not winning the best picture award against Oppenheimer, Barbie achieved multiple successes, such as winning for best comedy, best original screenplay, and best song for “I’m Just Ken.”

The lead acting awards, however, produced something of a surprise, with Paul Giamatti defeating Oppenheimer’s Cillian Murphy for The Holdovers, and Poor Things’ Emma Stone beating Killers of the Flower Moon’s Lily Gladstone. Unlike the Golden Globes, where all four actors won in separate categories for drama and comedy/musical, the Critics Choice operates as a head-to-head, suggesting Giamatti and Stone may have edged ahead in the race for the Oscars.

The Golden Globe Awards were closely reflected in the television category, with Beef winning four awards, The Bear winning four, and Succession winning three. Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook from Succession won again for best actor and actress, as did Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri from The Bear, and Steven Yeun and Ali Wong from Beef.

The Critics Choice Association, the largest group of its kind in the US and Canada, presents the awards and the ceremony was hosted by Chelsea Handler.
