João Cancelo has made allegations against Manchester City, stating that they are unappreciative and have spread falsehoods about his departure from the team.
The Portugal defender is currently on a year-long loan at Barcelona following his time at Bayern Munich in the latter part of the previous season. Cancelo was a crucial member of manager Pep Guardiola’s team until his sudden move to Germany on deadline day in January 2023.
Later reports claimed that Cancelo’s behavior in the dressing room had caused issues, as he had been overtaken by Lewis and Aké in the hierarchy.
The 29-year-old stated in an interview with the Portuguese sports newspaper A Bola that false information was spread. According to the individual, they were never a negative influence on their companions, and attestations from Aké and Rico can support this. They also clarified that there is no feeling of being better or worse than their peers.
“I believe Manchester City was unappreciative when they claimed that, considering my significant role during my time there. I never wavered in my dedication to the team and the supporters. I always gave my all.”
Cancelo, who joined City in a £60m move from Juventus in 2019, won back-to-back Premier League titles in 2021 and 2022. He felt his commitment to the club was clear for all to see when he played in a game at Arsenal on New Year’s Day 2022, with facial injuries visible after an attack in his home just hours earlier.
He recounted: “I can recall being robbed and assaulted, yet the following day, I still played against Arsenal at the Emirates. Such experiences are not easy to forget. My wife and daughter were left at home, feeling afraid. This event will stick in people’s minds, especially since Mr. Guardiola’s words carry greater weight than mine. I would rather remain silent.”
