The United Nations’ organization for migration reported on Friday that a grave containing over 65 bodies has been found in the southern region of Libya.

A representative from the IOM stated that Libyan security forces discovered a large grave.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) expressed deep concern and fear in a statement. They also stated that the details surrounding the deaths are unclear, but they suspect the individuals died while being illegally transported through the desert.

For over ten years, Libya has experienced tumultuous times following the ousting and killing of dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. This event, supported by NATO, contributed to the country’s transformation into a favorable environment for human smugglers and traffickers, who have been alleged to mistreat migrants.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) expressed gratitude for the efforts of Libyan officials in initiating an inquiry into the fatalities. They urged them to guarantee a respectful process for retrieving, identifying, and transporting the bodies of the deceased migrants, and to also inform and support their loved ones.

The spokesperson mentioned that each instance of a migrant going missing or losing their life is a heartbreaking ordeal for their families as they seek answers or come to terms with the tragic loss.

Not taking enough action has led to more people dying and has created unpleasant conditions for immigrants.

According to the IOM, these fatalities highlight the pressing necessity to tackle the difficulties surrounding unauthorized migration, including implementing a collaborative approach to combatting migrant smuggling and human trafficking.

The statement expressed that without established methods for legal migration, these tragic events will continue to occur on this path.

In 2023, the Missing Migrants project by the IOM reported at least 3,129 fatalities and disappearances on the Mediterranean pathway to Europe. This is considered the most dangerous migration route in the world.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) urged countries along the migration path to increase collaboration to guarantee the security and well-being of migrants, regardless of their legal status, throughout all phases of their travels.
