Watford have appointed Tom Cleverley as their interim coach, replacing Valérien Ismaël who was dismissed due to a string of unsuccessful performances resulting in just one win out of 10 league matches.
In May 2023, Ismaël was chosen as the new manager after Chris Wilder’s departure, marking the 19th time the Pozzo family has made a full-time managerial appointment in 11 years. However, due to recent outcomes, there was mounting pressure on Ismaël and the decision was ultimately made following the team’s loss to Coventry on Saturday.
Cleverley, the former Manchester United and England midfielder, has stepped up from coaching the club’s under-18s. Watford say his staff will be confirmed “in due course”.
After losing on Saturday, Ismaël shared his disappointment about yet another loss on their home turf. The team’s most recent win in the league was on November 28th at Vicarage Road.
According to Ismael, the team decided to have a more mobile midfield and had a strong beginning with numerous opportunities. However, they failed to score a second goal and unexpectedly conceded a penalty. Despite their efforts in the second half, the opposing team managed to score from their only shot on target, making it a disappointing result.

“We observed positive effort and strong momentum on the field to impact the current trajectory. Although we had some unsuccessful crosses – some too high, some too low, and some blocked – we made the attempt and our performance improved. In contrast, Coventry showed little on their end today. It was simply a day where luck was not on our side.”
