Andy Murray put on an impressive performance for a long period of time against a top-ranked opponent. However, he was unable to match the performance of the fifth-seeded player, Andrey Rublev, in the crucial moments. Rublev saved four set points and ultimately defeated Murray 7-6 (3), 6-1 in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open.
Murray has struggled at Indian Wells in the past due to the slow and windy conditions causing him to make early exits, even during his prime. However, he proved his form by advancing to the second round with a dominant victory over David Goffin. The next challenge for him would be much tougher against Rublev.
Rublev’s recent appearance on the court carried significance, as it marked his return since being disqualified from his semi-final game against Alexander Bublik in Dubai for erupting in anger towards a line umpire over a disputed call. His initial response to the incident received backlash for not adequately addressing his actions, but prior to his match, Rublev released a video offering a sincere apology for his behavior.
On Friday afternoon, during the early part of the tournament, Murray performed well on the court. In an effort to improve his game before the summer ends, Murray has been working hard to incorporate more aggressive tactics. He has been hitting the ball with more power, taking shots earlier, and taking more chances.
He played at a superior level, skillfully managing his service games and causing Rublev to feel the pressure on his own serves. In addition, he demonstrated exceptional movement in the first set: at a critical moment of 4-4 and 30-30, he rapidly shifted from one side to another before executing a precise and angled backhand passing shot that left Rublev unable to return. This helped him solidify a strong hold. Murray then positioned himself perfectly to win the set, earning four set points on Rublev’s serve at 5-4.
However, he was unable to secure the victory. With the exception of one unsuccessful second serve return by Murray, Rublev utilized powerful forehands and service winners to save the set points and gained confidence from his successful escape. By the tiebreak, Rublev had established dominance over the baseline.
As Murray gradually moved back from the baseline, his performance weakened while Rublev’s aggressive shotmaking was fully on display. Rublev controlled the tiebreak and maintained his strong momentum in the second set, efficiently securing the win against Murray.
Murray has mentioned that it’s unlikely for his career to continue after this summer. However, he is determined to improve his performance and is traveling extensively to achieve this goal. Despite his poor start to the season, he still hopes to regain his top form and compete in the tour. Although he played well against a top-ranked player, he is disappointed with another loss.
Angelique Kerber, who is 35 years old, successfully defeated Jelena Ostapenko, the 10th seed, in a comeback match. Kerber, a former top-ranked player and three-time grand slam winner, gave birth to her daughter Liana in February 2023. Meanwhile, the top seed and 2022 champion, Iga Swiatek, also advanced to the third round with a dominant 6-3, 6-0 victory over Danielle Collins.
