What motivated you to create a new album, Evolution, despite declaring your 2019 release Threads as your “last” album? Jade99
I have two teenage sons who often pose challenging inquiries. Recently, we delved into the topic of AI and it sparked a newfound inspiration for me to write in the mornings after they leave for school. As a result, I ended up with seven songs that served as a mix between a personal journal and a release of pent-up emotions. I reached out to my friend and producer Mike Elizondo and asked if he would be interested in collaborating on these songs. He was impressed and eager to help, and together we wrote two more tracks, ultimately creating an entire album.
It’s my response to what’s happening in my country, in my little world, and I guess in humanity at large. In Mike’s studio this young songwriter said she couldn’t get any traction from male singers unless she had a guy singing on the demo, so she paid $5 to have John Mayer’s voice singing on it, using AI. When she played it for us I almost started crying. It was so real, it felt like an assault on my spirit. We have to protect ourselves. So the album’s full of all this light and fluffy stuff [laughter].
Can you recall your dreams upon waking? Your latest song, “Alarm Clock,” captures the jarring disruption of a vivid dream. VerulamiumParkRanger
The frequency of my stress dreams has increased. The use of an alarm clock can be seen as a representation of life. When you are abruptly reminded of the harsh realities, it can take away from the pleasure of imagination, although life still has its moments of beauty. My cellphone serves as my alarm clock, causing me to wake up with the fear that my mind is being damaged by radiation.
Can you confirm if the inclusion of “Bud” beer in All I Wanna Do was a paid product placement?
I desire it! If it were, I would have earned a significant amount of money. However, that practice was greatly disapproved of at that time. It was referenced in Wyn Cooper’s poem, “Fun,” which served as inspiration for the song. Interestingly, I am from Missouri where Budweiser is produced, so it was my preferred beer. The line “I like a good beer buzz early in the morning” was not often based on fact, although I cannot deny that I have never experienced it.
Did you not like performing All I Wanna Do on tour for a while? Was it originally considered a disposable track that almost didn’t make it onto your debut album? NotDericeBannock
I did not particularly enjoy the song on the album and did not believe it belonged on there. I thought it was insignificant, but my younger brother, who was in college at the time, insisted, “No, that’s the song all of us kids love. That will be your biggest hit.” I replied, “No way, that will never be released,” but of course, it became a huge success. I joked, “I should hire you as my A&R guy.” There was a time when I disliked performing it, but then I realized that song took me to places around the world that a small-town kid like me never thought possible.
How did you go from “All I wanna do is have some fun” to duetting with the man in black [Johnny Cash] on Redemption Day? atribecalledvest
After traveling, one often finds themselves writing songs that hold a deep and significant meaning. In 1996, I wrote a song after visiting Bosnia and pondering the question, “Why is the US involved in Bosnia?” Despite the ongoing genocide, we were not taking action in Rwanda. My frustration poured out into the song. Years later, Johnny was producing an album and his brother-in-law gave him the song. He asked for permission to record it and after his passing, we recorded it together as a duet with his family’s approval.
What was it like singing with Emmylou Harris at Johnny Cash’s funeral? tomcasagranda
Three months before Johnny passed he had asked me to sing at his wife June’s funeral, where I saw this larger-than-life man become diminished by the loss of this woman he loved so passionately. Then he called me to say: “I’m not done yet. I’m going to record your song.”
After he died, his relatives requested for me to perform a duet with Emmy. I had only known Johnny for about two years, but witnessing her deep connection with him was a moving and life-changing experience. The funeral was filled with intense emotions. Our song of choice was Every Grain of Sand, which was Johnny’s beloved Bob Dylan tune. The lyrics were fitting for the occasion and I am thankful that Dylan existed. Whenever I created music, I would read his words to elevate my mindset.
Can you share how you discovered Bob Dylan’s song “Mississippi” and if he ever shared his thoughts on your rendition during The Globe Sessions? Whovian79
My manager, who happened to be friends with Dylan’s publisher, asked if Bob had any unreleased songs available. Dylan’s manager came over but instead of giving me a copy of the song, they played it for me and then left. I had to learn the song on my own and then record it. Years later, Dylan mentioned that he heard my version of “Mississippi” and I asked for his opinion. He responded with a witty remark, asking if I liked his version as well. He was not willing to give up the song easily. He has a great sense of humor. Bob also caused some trouble by asking if Eric Clapton had shown me any guitar licks while we were hanging out together.

Your song Woman in the White House longs for the day the US elects its first female president. Do you believe “we could use a little female common sense down on Pennsylvania Avenue” more than ever? VerulamiumParkRanger
The answer to this question varies based on the individual’s gender, but personally, I do believe it would have made a difference. I reflect on past situations where having a woman in a leadership role and utilizing feminine energy to solve issues could have been beneficial, rather than relying on aggression and violence. It is disappointing that the United States has never had a female president, and I have lost hope in our politicians who seem more concerned with their own wealth and power than representing the people. This situation is a complete disaster.

In a second! I love the legacy and history of it, and you have carte blanche to be dramatic. Roger Moore is my favourite Bond, but my kids like Daniel Craig, because if anything was made before 2010 they won’t go near it [laughter].

I used to be very close friends with Courteney Cox, making the experience very enjoyable. However, I would not do it again. Since I no longer reside in Los Angeles, it is not as convenient to travel to the studio. Additionally, my children are currently attending school, so I prioritize spending time with them.

I have only worked with the Stones in live collaborations, but I have worked with Keith in the studio and collaborated with Mick separately. When we communicate on the phone or spend time together, they both remain true to themselves. Mick is always Mick and Keith is always Keith. When they are together, they become the iconic duo of Mick and Keith. Both of them are incredibly intelligent, have a great sense of humor, and are amazing individuals even in their 80s. This gives me hope that I will have another 20 years to work with them.
How has your approach to creating music changed over the past 30 years? Joanna72Thomas
In the past, we would often plan to begin at 2pm but end up not starting until 10pm and continue writing and drinking until 5am. However, that is no longer the case. As we get older, we reach a point where we may no longer experience the same level of success as younger artists. But in a way, there is freedom in that. I can now write a song that may not be well-received by the general public without caring, because who will really listen to it? I also feel like I have earned the privilege to upset whoever I choose.
Which female singers influenced you during your formative years? jfried
Linda Rondstadt and Stevie Nicks had a big impact on me. In college, I was also influenced by Emmylou and Joni Mitchell, mainly for her songwriting. Seeing Bonnie Raitt play guitar in front of a band was a pivotal moment for me. It made me realize that women could do the same.

I believe that empathy is an innate instinct that we possess from birth. When we witness something or someone in pain, we often experience feelings of sadness. However, as we grow, we may learn to dull our sensitivity to these emotions. In such cases, it can be valuable to educate and assist individuals in regaining their sensitivity.

My weekends and mornings playing with my boys, just blasting music in the house and tinkering around. That’s a total joy.
