Alex Berenguer netted two goals as Athletic Bilbao handed Girona a 3-2 defeat on Monday, serving as a reminder to the Catalan team that their dreams of winning the La Liga title may not be so easy to achieve in reality.
Berenguer stole a pass from opposing midfielder Aleix García and scored, giving Athletic the lead just two minutes into the game. However, Viktor Tsyhankov equalized from a short distance soon after the second half began.
But Berenguer scored again in the 56th minute, putting the home team ahead once more. Then, four minutes later, Iñaki Williams also added to their lead with a similar goal.
Eric García scored a goal for Girona from a free-kick by García, bringing them back into the game. However, the hosts were able to hold on and clinch the victory.
Girona still holds second place in the rankings with 56 points, despite their back-to-back losses in the league. They are currently two points ahead of third-placed Barcelona and six points behind the top-ranked team, Real Madrid. Athletic, who are in fifth place, have moved up to 49 points and are only two points behind fourth-placed Atlético Madrid.
