The Duke of Sussex has made a sudden trip from California to the UK to visit his father, King Charles, in response to the news of the monarch’s cancer diagnosis, as announced by Buckingham Palace.
Prince Harry arrived at Heathrow Airport around midday following an 11-hour trip from Los Angeles. He was traveling alone, as the Duchess of Sussex and their two children remained in the US. Photos captured him leaving the airport in a black Range Rover with a police escort.
After receiving outpatient treatment for an undisclosed type of cancer on Monday, King Charles was said to be resting at Clarence House, the London home of the king and queen, when he arrived later.
Earlier, two black SUVs were spotted departing from the VIP Windsor suite at Heathrow airport and were later seen arriving at the royal residence at 2:42pm.
After briefly reuniting with Harry, Charles and Camilla departed their London home for Buckingham Palace. The king greeted well wishers as they made their way to the palace. Approximately 10 minutes later, a helicopter was spotted departing from the palace and landing at the king’s Sandringham estate in Norfolk.
On Monday, Buckingham Palace declared that the monarch, who became king 17 months ago, has been diagnosed with cancer. This diagnosis was made while receiving treatment for a non-cancerous enlarged prostate, which was a separate concern. The palace clarified that the king does not have prostate cancer.
Although Buckingham Palace has not provided any additional information on the specific type of cancer or outlook, Rishi Sunak seemed to indicate in a BBC Radio 5 Live interview that the king’s condition was detected at an early stage.
When questioned about the basis of his comment, No 10 indicated that the Prime Minister was likely referencing the acknowledgement from Buckingham Palace regarding the prompt actions of his medical team.
The 75-year-old King Charles, who has cancelled all of his official responsibilities, has started receiving medical treatment as an outpatient with a team of specialized doctors. According to a source from the palace, “He is in good spirits and health overall, but is understandably frustrated that his illness has not only affected his own plans, but also those of others.”
Harry last appeared alongside the Windsors at the king’s coronation and left swiftly after the ceremony to fly home for his son Prince Archie’s fourth birthday.
There has been speculation surrounding his recent visit, raising the question of whether he and his brother, William, may reconcile. According to reports, the two have grown apart following Harry’s accusations against his family during an interview with Oprah. Additionally, in the months following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, Harry released a Netflix documentary and announced plans to publish a memoir titled “Spare”.
Prior to Archie’s birth, there were allegations of racism surrounding his skin color. It was claimed that two high-ranking members of the royal family made derogatory comments, and there were also accusations that Kensington Palace covered up reports of William’s alleged bullying towards Harry, leading to his departure from the royal family.
Harry alleged that Charles envied Meghan and Kate, did not embrace him when he shared the news of his mother Princess Diana’s passing, and expressed his belief that the king was not equipped for raising children on his own, though he acknowledged that he made an effort.
The duke alleged that William physically assaulted him and tossed him into a dog bowl during a dispute over Meghan. He also teased William about his panic attacks and, along with Kate, encouraged him to wear a Nazi uniform at a costume party.
Harry claimed that Charles begged his sons during a tense gathering following the funeral of the Duke of Edinburgh, saying: “I implore you, my sons. Do not make my last years miserable.”
The House of Lords has expressed their well-wishes to the king. Lord McFall of Alcluith, the lord speaker, opened Tuesday’s upper chamber session by saying that they were all saddened by the news of the king’s illness. The entire house is thinking of the king and his family and eagerly awaits his return to his official duties.
The opinions were supported with shouts of agreement throughout the entire house.
The former press secretary of the deceased queen, Charles Anson, informed BBC Breakfast that the king was adamant about making the public aware of his condition and its treatment as a sense of responsibility, but cautioned against expecting frequent updates. Anson stated that this transparency about the diagnosis reflects the current era.
He stated, “The country’s affairs and the monarch’s constitutional duties carry on seamlessly, with other members of the family available to fill in when necessary.”
