‘Never satisfied’: Bompastor turns sights to Chelsea treble after sealing WSL glory

Chelsea’s manager, Sonia Bompastor, immediately turned her attention towards the prospect of completing a domestic treble as her side celebrated winning a sixth consecutive Women’s Super League title.

The Frenchwoman’s team, who had already won the League Cup in March, clinched the title in her first season in English football with Wednesday’s 1-0 victory at Manchester United as they capitalised on second-placed Arsenal dropping points earlier on Wednesday evening with their 5-2 loss at Aston Villa.

“It feels great, It feels a little bit unreal because we were not expecting to achieve that tonight,” Bompastor said. “I was not expecting Arsenal to drop points.

“I always look for ‘ideal’ and ‘perfect’. I’m never satisfied. I’m already almost focused on the treble and the FA Cup final.

“I want to thank Emma [Hayes]. I’m sure she’s really happy. She left the club in such a great position for me to build on that legacy.”

With their victory, Chelsea also set a record for the longest consecutive unbeaten run of games in a single WSL campaign (20) and they have still not lost any of their domestic fixtures under the management of Bompastor, who arrived last summer to replace Hayes, who had been in charge for 12 years.

Bompastor also said she feels her team’s achievements have been underestimated this term, adding: “Yes, I’m listening sometimes, I’ve heard some noise that perhaps it’s ‘too easy’ for Chelsea – that’s not easy, that’s not easy, to beat two times Manchester City, two times Arsenal and two times United [referring to having clinched league doubles over the rest of the sides in the top four].

“That’s unbelievable. I don’t think it’s easy, that’s never easy. It’s a lot of work every day. I never let my players breathe. I know, the last few weeks, it was difficult for them. That’s the mentality you need when you want to be one of the best teams.”

Chelsea have still never lost a WSL game against Manchester United, having drawn one and now won 10 of their 11 meetings, and this was the third time they had sealed a WSL title in a game where they had beaten Marc Skinner’s side, after similarly doing so in 2022 and 2024. Bompastor’s Chelsea will meet Manchester United at Wembley on 18 May for the chance to complete the domestic treble.
