The Inseparables review – marionettes on a quest to keep a puppet theatre alive

The poster for this children’s animated film proudly proclaims “From the creators of Toy Story,” and the storyline centers around the concept of toys coming to life. However, be warned that The Inseparables is not a Pixar production and, apart from two of the writers, this uninteresting, humorless, and lacking-in-soul movie bears no resemblance to Toy Story.

The story takes place in Central Park, New York, where a group of puppets have been performing in a children’s theater since their creator retired. However, it is not mentioned how they manage to keep the theater running or cover their expenses. Among the group, not all of the actors are content with their roles. Don, a clown with thinning hair, is tired of always being cast as the fool and longs to play a brave knight on a noble quest. Drawing inspiration from his namesake Don Quixote, Don transforms the world into a thrilling adventure in his mind. Eventually, he is forced to become a true hero when thieves steal the other puppets to sell online.

The animation is completely satisfactory, but lacks charm and creativity. The character DJ Doggy Dog, a rapping stuffed toy dog, fails to connect with young viewers and is oddly unappealing. Some voice actors seem to have taken their characters’ rigid nature too seriously. It is worth noting that the writers credited for this film are the same ones who worked on The Garfield Movie, not Joss Whedon and Andrew Stanton who worked on Toy Story and have since moved on to other projects.
