Trevor Smith Jr, who was born in Brooklyn in 1972 to Jamaican parents, used his cultural heritage to propel his rap career. He brought a unique ragga style to the growing hip-hop scene in New York City during the late 1980s. He first gained recognition as a member of the group Leaders of the New School, and solidified his reputation with a standout verse on A Tribe Called Quest’s popular song Scenario. In 1996, he launched a successful solo career with his impressive debut single Woo Hah!! Got You All in Check, which reached the Top 10 charts in both the US and UK.

It sparked a series of impressive rap hits, utilizing imagery of a post-apocalyptic world and often accompanied by visually striking videos directed by Hype Williams. These include songs like “Gimme Some More” which samples “Psycho,” “Turn It Up/Fire It Up” which samples “Knight Rider,” and “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See” which samples Seals and Crofts. Collaborating with Janet Jackson, Busta Rhymes successfully entered the pop-R&B scene with “What’s It Gonna Be?!” which also had one of the most expensive music videos ever made. Another collaboration, “I Know What You Want” with Mariah Carey, achieved similar success. Both songs reached the top 3 on the US charts, while more energetic tracks like “Pass the Courvoisier” and “Break Ya Neck” still remain popular today.

During breaks from creating his own music, he collaborated with numerous artists, including a standout verse on Chris Brown’s Look at Me Now that showcased his impressive lyrical skills. He also explored his roots through collaborations on reggae and dancehall tracks. In addition, he mentored fellow rappers in the Flipmode Squad, produced and rapped on his own songs, and pursued acting roles in movies like the Shaft remake starring Samuel L Jackson, Narc, and Halloween: Resurrection.

Following his successful return with the 2020 album Extinction Level Event 2: The Wrath of God, all-star artist Busta Rhymes has now announced his upcoming project Blockbusta. This highly anticipated album has been produced by a talented trio of industry heavyweights: Pharrell, Timbaland, and Swizz Beatz. In preparation for its release on November 24th, Busta will be taking questions about his impressive career in the creative arts. Please leave your questions in the comments section below by 3pm GMT on Monday, November 20th.
