This one will be kept.
Reworded: Some notable past winners of the Sports Personality of the Year award include Chris Chataway, Henry Cooper, Princess Anne, David Steele, Steve Cram, Torvill and Dean, Steve Davis, Michael Owen, Andy Murray, Mark Cavendish, Lewis Hamilton, and Beth Mead. The highly anticipated winner this year is expected to be Mary Earps, the goalkeeper for England’s women’s team who played a crucial role in their journey to the 2023 World Cup final.
On Tuesday, the 70th annual awards will be hosted by Gary Lineker, Clare Balding, Gabby Logan, and Alex Scott. The event will feature a mix of highlights, interviews, montages, and what were previously called “wheezes.” These may include moments such as Damon Hill racing in a go-kart while Colin Jackson or John Virgo perform trick shots using Sandy Lyle’s putter.
Earps is a valuable asset to Manchester United and stands out as a star player far surpassing any of Erik ten Hag’s less successful players. In addition, a common complaint in the 1990s and 2000s about giving awards to those who simply achieved success or drove fast cars, is that she has a distinct personality. She also provided a memorable moment.
It may not have the same impact as the infamous Bill Grundy interview with the Sex Pistols, but it will be intriguing to see how the BBC presents Earpsy’s most memorable (apologies for the choice of words) moment in women’s football. Her save on Jennifer Hermoso’s penalty kick in the World Cup final, followed by her celebration of “[expletive] yes, [expletive] off,” was a relatable and powerful sporting moment in 2023. Each previous winner had their own unique selling point, whether it was Steele fending off Australia’s aggressive quick-bowling attack in 1975 or Princess Anne and Zara Phillips being members of the Royal Family.
However, this is a democratic occasion, chosen by the general population of Great Britain, so those who are still reluctant to support women’s football will have to endure the evening with a grumpy attitude. Not only is Earps the favored choice of bookmakers, she is also in high demand commercially. On Monday, the newest batch of Earps England No 1 jerseys sold out within five minutes on the FA’s online store. This was after Earps herself questioned why they were not available while she was in Australia. In October, her jerseys sold out quickly and now, those who are not fans of women’s football should take note that they are selling in the same quantities as England men’s goalkeeper jerseys.
“Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift, that’s why it’s called the present.”
“The past is in the past, the future is unknown, but the present is a present.”
As a child, I often thought about attending university. I spent a lot of time on my own, reading books and playing PlayStation or taking afternoon naps. But then I wondered why I couldn’t use that time to continue studying. I was also interested in the business side of sports and how it is viewed in America. Giorgio Chiellini, who initially wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a doctor, ended up earning his master’s degree in business administration from the University of Turin while playing for Juventus. He explains that his decision to leave for LAFC was not just based on furthering his career on the field. Interestingly, he has since retired since this interview was conducted.
FOOTBALL DAILY LETTERS
As someone who unfortunately has to use TwiXer for work, I was hoping that anyone not involved in the social media scandal would disregard Barton’s recent nonsensical tirades as he tries once again to reinvent and redeem himself. As the beloved late Linda Smith once said about former MP Neil Hamilton (during the time when the Conservative party was still in power but crumbling due to incompetence and corruption): “I don’t even like mentioning his name because it gives him the attention he craves, and I don’t want to give him that satisfaction” – Noble Francis.
I am amazed that no politician has mentioned that “Sunak has lost the support of his team” – Kevin Worley.
Kalvin Phillips should tell Pep to stick his apology where the sun don’t shine and come back home to Leeds. We should be the ones apologising for not fighting harder to keep him at Elland Road” – Mick Beeby.
Renamed: Referring to oneself as a journalist [specifically, the editor of Football Daily], are you? It appears that Everton’s victory against Chelsea did not pique your interest enough to leave any remarks. Three consecutive wins without conceding any goals. Wake up, please! Perhaps you could share your opinions on our appeal, but I am not expecting much – Anthony Astbury.
“Instead of discussing David Moyes being fired (old news, small details – complete email version), let’s focus on creating a statue in his honor.” – Hamish Brown.
Darren Leathley congratulates Richard Herring on his new position at Daily Towers, amidst the abundance of acronyms used in yesterday’s Still Want Mores.
Guy Redmill stated that the term in question is not an acronym, but rather an abbreviation. He also noted that he is not the only one who holds this belief, although others may disagree.
Please email any correspondence to [email protected]. Congratulations to Kevin Worley, the recipient of today’s letter of the day award, who will receive a copy of Pitch Publishing’s Reign of the Lionesses. Check out their excellent selection of football books at their online store.
