Ministers will review the London mayor’s choice to deny planning approval for a large-scale entertainment venue resembling those found in Las Vegas.
The housing secretary, Michael Gove, has chosen to exercise his authority to review Sadiq Khan’s decision to reject the 21,000-seat, 300-foot-tall MSG sphere in Stratford, east London, and determine its standing.
The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities will determine the corresponding application for advertisement approval.
Gove has declared in a letter to the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) that there will be a local inquiry regarding the planning application.
MSG desired to construct a spherical venue in Stratford, featuring exterior illumination and the highest resolution LED screen in the world. The space would also boast immersive sound systems for the purpose of hosting concerts, shows, and sporting events.
However, Khan announced last month, in reaction to a development proposal from MSG, that the construction of the sphere would not be permitted.
The mayor of Labour expressed concerns that the location would create excessive light, causing harm to the appearance of nearby properties, negatively impacting the well-being of individuals, and diminishing the overall enjoyment of residents in their own homes.
The mayor continued to express that the proposed plan would be too large and overpowering, and would not align with principles of good and sustainable design.
The department of Gove has verified that the mayor’s refusal has been referred to, in a letter dated December 1st. The planning minister, Lee Rowley, is taking action on behalf of the housing secretary.
Officials from the department responsible for levelling up stated that it would not be suitable to provide a response regarding the suggestion, as the decision by the minister is still pending.
MSG’s sister company, Sphere Entertainment, indicated that they were no longer interested in constructing a venue in London, despite Gove’s involvement.
The company’s spokesperson stated that the mayor’s last-minute report hijacked the entire five-year planning process.
The people of London should be disappointed that they will not reap the rewards of this innovative project, and potential investors in London should be cautious.

She stated, “While Mr. Gove’s efforts are praiseworthy, they still seem to be lacking in originality. We are unable to continue taking part in a procedure that can be easily disrupted by shifts in politics.”
“As mentioned earlier, our attention will be on the numerous progressive cities.”
MSG purchased the 2-hectare (4.7-acre) plot of land, which had been unused since serving as a temporary coach park during the 2012 London Olympics.
The message stated that thousands of job opportunities would have been generated had the venue, designed after a building in Las Vegas, been authorized.
A representative for Khan stated that London is welcoming of investments from all over the globe, and Sadiq hopes to see an increase in top-rated, ambitious, and cutting-edge entertainment establishments in our city.
After reviewing the planning request for the MSG Sphere, the mayor has been presented with evidence from a third party that suggests the current plans would have a detrimental effect on the surrounding community.
