In 2023, the Guardian and Observer will be hosting a charity telethon. We encourage you to call our writers and make a donation.

As part of the yearly charity telethon, readers can chat with their beloved journalists from The Guardian and The Observer on Saturday. This year, the event aims to raise funds for refugees and asylum seekers.

A team of journalists, such as Marina Hyde, John Crace, Polly Toynbee, Owen Jones, Peter Bradshaw, Sali Hughes, Simon Hattenstone, Nosheen Iqbal, and Zoe Williams, will be available to answer your calls and accept donations.

In 2023, funds are being raised for three charitable organizations: the Refugee Councils of Britain, Refugees at Home, and Naccom. These groups provide assistance to homeless and destitute asylum seekers and refugees, as well as advocate for better treatment of those who have fled war and persecution and arrived in the UK.

The phone lines for the Telethon will be available from 10am to 6pm GMT on Saturday, December 16th. To contribute using a credit or debit card and speak with our reporters, dial 0203 353 4368.

The recent call for donations has received an overwhelming response from readers of the Guardian and Observer, with over £450,000 donated in the past week. The timely topic has resonated with numerous donors who have reached out to us via email, expressing their discontent and outrage towards the government’s harsh treatment of asylum seekers and refugees.

Katharine Viner, the Editor-in-Chief of the Guardian, stated in her column introducing the appeal that the 2023 campaign aims to promote the ideals of kindness, respect, tolerance, and compassion. These values serve as the foundation for the missions of our partner charities, who are also dedicated to promoting social justice and human rights.

Our three collaborating non-profit organizations offer housing, nourishment, and guidance to alleviate a winter emergency situation caused by sudden changes in UK government regulations, leaving thousands of refugees without a home. They also provide ongoing assistance to aid in the refugees’ physical and mental recovery, develop their skills, and regain stability in their lives.

  • Donations can be given online using a credit card, debit card, or PayPal, without the need for a telethon.
