The top prize at the European Film Awards goes to Justine Triet’s film Anatomy of a Fall.

An arthouse whodunit about sexual jealousy and simmering creative rivalry between two married writers was everyone’s envy at Saturday night’s European Film Awards (EFA) in Berlin, with Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall beating her competitors to take home four of the five major awards.

Based on a fatal plunge from the highest level of a chalet in the French Alps, Triet’s dramatic film received top honors at the European Film Awards, including the prestigious awards for best film, best director, and best screenwriter. Lead actress Sandra Hüller also won for her performance in the film.

Hüller, the German performer, was also a nominee for her part in The Zone of Interest by Jonathan Glazer. She was a major victor of the evening, having previously won the best actress award in 2016 for her role in the cult comedy Toni Erdmann. At the age of 45, she now joins a distinguished group of leading ladies in cinema, including Juliette Binoche, Isabelle Huppert, Carmen Maura, and Charlotte Rampling, who have won the prize more than once.

Triet claims that her film, Anatomy of a Fall, has a strong chance of receiving a nomination at the upcoming Academy Awards, thanks to the performance of actor Hüller who she wrote the film for. When questioned about the film’s potential for an Oscar, Triet stated that they are now actively pursuing that goal.

Winners (L-R back row) Isabel Coixet, Belen Lopez-Puigcerver, Ana Lopez-Puigcerver, Markus Binder, Pablo Berger and Molly Manning Walker (R), (L-R front row): Laura Pedro, Emita Frigato, Sandra Hueller, Anna Hints and Justine Triet.

In her speech accepting the award in Berlin, Hüller requested a moment of silence from the audience and encouraged them to “envision peace”. However, she did not mention a specific conflict.

Mads Mikkelsen, a Danish performer, was awarded the title of best actor for his portrayal of a commoner who becomes a captain in the period drama The Promised Land, directed by Nikolaj Arcel.

Taking place at the Arena venue in Berlin, alongside the Spree river, the European Film Awards (EFA) seemed to be a close competition between three films: Anatomy of a Fall, The Zone of Interest, and Falling Leaves by renowned Finnish filmmaker Aki Kaurismäki. The latter two had both received five nominations in the top categories, making them strong contenders.

The goal of the award is to acknowledge the top films from the past year produced in Europe, encompassing both EU and non-EU member countries.

Unfortunately, Glazer and Kaurismäki’s movies did not have a successful evening. Glazer’s film about Auschwitz only won an award for best sound, while Triet’s film received a total of six awards.

During the Covid lockdown, Triet and her husband, Arthur Harari, collaborated on Anatomy of a Fall, which reveals the animosity and sexual envy between the characters Sandra and her husband Samuel (played by Samuel Theis), both writers who often use their personal lives as inspiration for their work. In her acceptance speech, Triet mentioned that they put their relationship to the test but were able to overcome it.

Her significant other remarked that the movie showcasing a multilingual couple could potentially be a positive indication for the Franco-German alliance that serves as the foundation of the European Union. “Perhaps this film will strengthen the bond between the German and French governments,” he stated.

At the event, other victors included the steamy and personal film “Smoke Sauna Sisterhood”, directed by Anna Hints from Estonia, who delivered her gratitude in the form of a musical performance.

Two British directors announced themselves on the international scene: 30-year-old first-time British director Molly Manning Walker added to her Un Certain Regard award at Cannes by scooping the European Discovery prize for debuting directors with How to Have Sex, while Charlotte Regan, 29, received the Young Audience award for her comedy-drama Scrapper.

Manning Walker stated to the media following the awards ceremony that Charlotte and they both share a desire to improve the way sets are managed by approaching them with care and compassion. They hope this will result in better work.
