A biographical account written by Mathew Knowles, father of Beyoncé Knowles, will be adapted into a movie. The film will tell the story of his formative years as a youth involved in activism.
Variety recently reported that Knowles’ 2017 novel, “Racism from the Eyes of a Child,” is currently being developed into a film and also has potential for a TV series. The book delves into Knowles’ experiences growing up in Alabama before the civil rights movement, where he attended racially segregated schools. In an interview, Knowles revealed that he faced discrimination and abuse during this time, including physical violence and humiliation. He eventually graduated from Fisk University, a renowned HBCU in Nashville, Tennessee.
The movie will focus on the initial section of the novel, which highlights the prominent figures who fought for civil rights, such as Martin Luther King Jr, Albert Turner, Ralph Abernathy, and Coretta Scott King. Knowles expressed to Variety that these individuals were a source of inspiration for him, stating, “These are the men who filled me with pride.”
The project appears to be different from The Mathew Knowles Story, plans for which emerged in 2022 after Knowles sold his Music World Entertainment Group to investment fund APX Capital. The Mathew Knowles Story is posited as a “King Richard-style origin story” about Knowles’ stewardship of his daughters Beyoncé and Solange’s music careers, including Beyoncé’s rise to fame in Destiny’s Child. Knowles managed Beyoncé until 2011, when they split in what was described as “a mutual decision”.
