Could a new supergroup form between Liam Gallagher and John Squire? The two musicians are hinting at a possible collaboration.

Liam Gallagher from Oasis and John Squire from the Stone Roses, two renowned Manchester musicians, are hinting at a joint project that is anticipated to be an album released in 2024.

Gallagher recently introduced a new website, gallaghersquire.com, and shared about Squire on his social media platforms. On Instagram, he shared a statement praising Squire as the top guitarist of his generation and in the world, accompanied by a video of Squire performing with Oasis at the iconic Knebworth concerts in 1996. Squire also made a special appearance at Gallagher’s solo shows at Knebworth in 2022.

No further information has been provided about the collaboration, but it will mark the first new music from Squire since 2016. Squire is most recognized for bringing a psychedelic and versatile sound to the Stone Roses, with his beautifully chiming riffs on songs like Waterfall, fiery soloing on I Am the Resurrection, and funky playing on Fool’s Gold. The band achieved four Top 10 singles and their debut album is considered one of the greatest in Manchester, and even British, history. After their breakup in 1996, Squire went on to form the Britpop band the Seahorses, whose only album Do It Yourself reached No 2. He also released two solo albums in 2002 and 2004.

Afterwards, his main focus shifted towards visual art. In 2009, he included the statement, “I have no intention of disrespecting the legacy of the influential Manchester band, the Stone Roses,” in one of his artworks. However, the band did reunite in 2011 for a few concerts and even released two new songs in 2016. In 2019, Squire confirmed to the Guardian that the band had disbanded once again.

After Oasis broke up in 2009, Gallagher has continued to have a successful music career. He initially led the band Beady Eye, which put out two albums in 2011 and 2013, before branching out on his own. He has released three albums that have topped the UK charts, as well as three live albums, two of which also reached number one. His latest studio album, titled C’Mon You Know, was released in 2022 and included collaborations with guest songwriters such as Dave Grohl, Ezra Koenig from Vampire Weekend, and pop singer Tove Lo.

Instead of a reunion for Oasis, Gallagher is preparing to perform songs from the band’s debut album Definitely, Maybe in its entirety on a tour in 2024. This includes a headline performance at the Reading and Leeds festivals. Gallagher announced the tour by stating: “Definitely, Maybe is the most significant album of the 90s, without a doubt. It has played a crucial role in my career and I’m sure it has for you too, so let’s celebrate together.”

The possibility of an Oasis reunion has been a long-standing dream for fans, despite doubts due to the ongoing feud between the Gallagher brothers. However, Liam extended an olive branch of sorts when Noel and his wife split up. On social media platform X, Liam wrote, “I still love my brother Rkid and he’s going through a tough time right now. But I believe things will work out and he knows I’m here for him. Oasis forever.”
