The New York Times reported on the vibrant hues at the Filoli estate in New York, where Joe Biden and Xi Jinping are holding a meeting. The location was not revealed until the day before their bilateral meeting.

Filoli estate is a magnificent property consisting of a large mansion and sprawling gardens spanning 654 acres on the scenic California coast. This estate has appeared in popular media such as ‘Dynasty’ in the 1980s and ‘The Wedding Planner’ in 2001. It has also hosted lavish weddings for Facebook executives and is open to the public for garden tours.

Except for Wednesday.

Top aides to President Biden have worked with Chinese officials for weeks to ensure that this manicured setting would be the perfect backdrop to host a diplomatic summit between Mr Biden and President Xi Jinping of China – two men who share a deep skepticism of each other, but also a mutual belief that their countries must avoid allowing their diplomatic and military interactions to deteriorate from fierce competition into outright conflict …

The website had many attractive aspects. It is situated amidst the hills, making it one of the least crowded areas in a highly populated section of California. The meeting’s location was not revealed until the day before, most likely to prevent demonstrators from gathering around the site. There were no protesters visible at the gates on Wednesday morning when Mr. Biden’s motorcade arrived, but some could be spotted along the way from San Francisco.

Filoli is a vast property located in one of the most affluent areas of the United States. It was constructed in the early 1900s by a family who became wealthy during the California gold rush and desired a nearby escape from San Francisco. The original owner, William Bowers Bourn II, named the estate “Filoli” by combining the first letters of his personal motto: “Fight for a just cause. Love your Fellow Man. Live a Good Life.”

Biden spoke to Xi, stating:

Dear President, we have a long history together. While we have not always seen eye to eye, this is not unexpected. Our discussions have always been open, honest, and beneficial. I greatly appreciate our conversations because I believe it is crucial for us to have a clear understanding of each other as leaders, without any misunderstandings or miscommunications.

It is important to prevent competition from turning into conflict and handle it responsibly. This is the goal of the United States and what we intend to achieve. I also believe this is what the world desires for both nations.

It is our duty to collaborate with each other, for the sake of our community and the greater good. We must come together to address pressing global issues such as climate change, counter-narcotics, and artificial intelligence.

Xi addressed Biden, saying:

The partnership between China and the United States, which holds great significance in international relations, should be considered in light of the rapidly changing global landscape. Our cooperation should be aimed at benefiting both of our populations and fulfilling our duty towards advancing humanity.

The partnership between China and the United States has faced challenges over the last 50 years, but has continued to progress despite obstacles. As two major nations, they cannot afford to sever ties.

Planet Earth is big enough for the two countries to succeed … As long as [China and the US] respect each other, co-exist in peace and pursue win-win cooperation, they will be fully capable of rising above differences and find the right way for the two major countries to get along with each other.
