The British independent film awards nominations are dominated by Rye Lane, a romantic comedy set in London.

The romantic comedy, Rye Lane, set in London and featuring Vivian Oparah and David Jonsson, has become the top contender at the British Independent Film Awards (Bifa). It has received 16 nominations, including best British independent film, best director for Raine Allen-Miller, and best joint lead performance.

In March, Rye Lane was released after a successful debut at the Sundance film festival. The film has received positive reviews, with Peter Bradshaw of the Guardian describing it as having “friendly and positive energy” and Mark Kermode of the Observer stating that it will leave viewers with “a smile on their face and a spring in their step”. The film is named after a street in Peckham, a district in south London, and has also received two nominations for Allen-Miller (best director and best debut director) as well as for its screenplay.

Scrapper and All of Us Strangers are leading the nominations with 14 each. Scrapper, written and directed by Charlotte Regan, received positive reviews from Peter Bradshaw for its portrayal of a father-daughter relationship. The film features Harris Dickinson and Lola Campbell, who are both nominated for the best joint lead award. The other film, directed by Andrew Haigh, is titled All of Us Strangers and has not yet been released in the UK. However, it has received high praise since its premiere at the Telluride film festival in September. In his five-star review, Bradshaw described it as “an incredibly satisfying and emotionally impactful experience.”

Molly Manning Walker, the director of “How to Have Sex,” has received 13 nominations, just one less than Regan for “Scrapper.” Manning Walker has been nominated for best cinematography as well as best director and debut director, and her screenplay and debut screenwriter are also recognized.

The announcement of the winners will take place during a ceremony in London on December 3rd.
