The Europa League made a brief stop in Maribor, Slovenia, not for sightseeing at the city’s renowned castle, but to surprise a former player on Thursday.

Former players can receive various forms of treatment from their past supporters, however Josip Ilicic, who played for Atalanta for five years, continues to hold a special place in the hearts of the club’s fans.

In August 2022, Ilicic departed the club by mutual agreement as his contract was terminated due to ongoing struggles with mental health.

On September 1, 2022, the supporters bid him a touching farewell before their home match against Torino. More than a year has passed since then, and it is evident that the send off was filled with sincere emotions.

Ilicic returned to his previous team NK Maribor one month after departing from Atalanta. On Thursday morning, fans from Bergamo appeared at the training facility to surprise the 35-year-old Slovenian player.

Two buses, each with 60 fans, arrived after leaving Italy at midnight. Upon arrival, there were friendly greetings, embraces, and cheers for the adored player. Many photos were taken with Ilicic, who appeared visibly moved and joyful.

The supporters gifted him with the banner they displayed during his farewell evening in Bergamo last year. Ilicic has also stated that he will attend Atalanta’s match against Sturm Graz.

Aston Villa, known for their high-scoring games, will be facing AZ Alkmaar in both the Europa League and the Conference.

Later tonight, when Will Unwin takes over for me, the standout matches are Brighton vs Ajax and Liverpool vs Toulouse.
