A body has been found in the search for a man who was last seen in a Highlands village more than a year ago.

Rodrigo Falcon, an Argentinian, disappeared in freezing conditions in the early hours of 11 December 2022.

Falcon had been at The Vault nightclub in Aviemore in the Cairngorms, leaving the venue at about 2.30am.

CCTV footage recorded at about 3.10am showed the then 33-year-old walking down Grampian Road towards the southern end of the town.

Extensive searches were carried out throughout the town and surrounding area, with police divers searching a section of the River Spey and local lochs.

Private investigators have also examined the case, but Falcon was never found. In December last year Police Scotland issued a fresh appeal.

Police said a body was discovered just outside Aviemore at about 2.15pm on Friday. Formal identification is still to take place, however the family of Falcon have been informed.

A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.

Last December, Falcon’s mother, Daniela, told the BBC of her heartbreak, having just marked a year since her son’s appearance.

“I wish with all my heart that no one else has to go through such a situation. We want Rod to come home. Any information – no matter how small – is huge for us,” she said.

The bar worker, known as “Rod” to his friends, loved to travel as a keen photographer.

He had lived in the Highlands since 2016 after falling “in love” with the region.
