Jadon Sancho and Marco Reus scored to help Borussia Dortmund secure a tense 2-0 victory over PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday, clinching a spot in the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in three years with a 3-1 total score.
Sancho, borrowed from Manchester United, skillfully shot the ball between the legs of an Eindhoven player and it bounced in off the post during the third minute. Reus sealed the victory with a composed shot in added time during the second half.
Sancho scored his second goal in two games since his return to Dortmund on loan from United. The midfielder had previously moved to United from Dortmund in 2021 on a five-year contract, but struggled to secure a consistent spot on the team and only played in three matches this season before going back to Dortmund in January.
On Saturday, Sancho scored in the 2-1 victory against Werder Bremen. Donyell Malen came close to scoring for the home team, but his shot narrowly missed the far post.
Edin Terzic, the coach of Dortmund, expressed his belief that the team’s hard work paid off in securing their spot in the quarter-finals. He acknowledged their strong performance in the first 30 minutes, considering it to be their best of the season. However, he regretted not scoring more goals during this period of intense pressure. In the second half, they were unable to maintain this level of play but showed great determination in their defensive efforts.
In 2007, Eindhoven made it to the quarter-finals but have not reached that stage since. However, they showed improvement in the second half. Substitute Hirving Lozano hit the post with a powerful long-distance shot. In the 70th minute, Johan Bakayoko made a good run past Mats Hummels, resulting in a save from Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. Eindhoven continued to push for a goal to level the score.
Niclas Füllkrug believed he had calmed the home team and secured the win when he scored with a volley off a free-kick from Reus in the 77th minute. However, his goal was declared offside and the German team had to withstand the increasing pressure from the Dutch side. Luuk de Jong had the opportunity to equalize the game and force extra time, but instead of simply tapping the ball in, he wildly shot it over the crossbar.
“I received the ball and performed a one-two play with Teze,” De Jong explained. “However, I was off balance when I took the shot and everything happened very quickly. I definitely regret missing it.” Following this, Dortmund scored on their next move, with Reus finishing a swift counterattack to secure the victory.
