Leicester City Women are currently conducting an investigation into their manager, Willie Kirk, following accusations of a romantic involvement with one of their players. As a result, Kirk will not be present on the sidelines for their upcoming game against Liverpool on Saturday.
Kirk’s suspension is currently in effect as the allegations against him are being investigated.
A representative from Leicester stated that Willie Kirk is currently helping the club with an internal procedure. The results of this procedure will be decided at a later time. Jennifer Foster, the assistant manager, and Stephen Kirby, the first-team coach, will lead the team in this Saturday’s match against Liverpool for the FA Women’s Cup.
Kirk has been asked for his input.
In July of 2022, Kirk was chosen to be the director of football for the Women’s Super League club. Then on November 3rd of the same year, they became the manager, replacing Lydia Bedford.
The 45-year-old manager joined Leicester at a time when the team had lost six consecutive games without earning any points. Under his leadership, they were able to finish the season with 16 points, placing 10th, ahead of Brighton and Reading, who were relegated.
Kirk started his career as a senior manager with Hibernian, and also spent a short period with the Preston Athletic men’s team before transitioning to management in the Women’s Super League. After spending three years with Bristol City, he was then hired as an assistant manager to Casey Stoney at Manchester United.
In December 2018, Kirk left his position after six months to become the manager of Everton. However, he was fired due to a disappointing start to the 2021-22 season, with the team winning only two out of their first five matches.
Leicester currently holds the seventh spot in the Women’s Super League and has accumulated 16 points with seven remaining games. Their next match will be against Liverpool in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.
