Bruun Larsen and Fofana give Burnley vital victory against 10-man Brentford

Burnley registered their first win in 11 Premier League games as Vincent Kompany’s relegation-threatened side defeated 10-man Brentford 2-1 at Turf Moor.

The home side took the lead through a 10th-minute Jacob Bruun Larsen penalty after a foul on Vitinho by Sergio Reguilón, who received a straight red card.

David Datro Fofana made a mistake by missing a shot towards the end of the first half, but made up for it by scoring another goal just after an hour. Brentford’s Kristoffer Ajer scored a goal with only eight minutes left in the game, but Burnley was able to hold on to secure their first win in 2024 and fourth win in the league this season.

Kompany has made it clear that he is still determined to avoid being demoted. After finally breaking their streak of not winning, there is an eight-point difference between Burnley in second-to-last place and the point needed to stay safe. On the other hand, Brentford in the fifteenth spot is four points ahead of the area where teams are at risk of being demoted, but they also haven’t won in six games.

Kompany decided to make a switch in the lineup from their previous match against West Ham. They chose to replace their goalkeeper James Trafford, who had played in every game this season, with Arijanet Muric for his first Premier League appearance.

Brentford’s manager, Thomas Frank, made two alterations from their 2-1 defeat against Arsenal as they welcomed back Reguilón into the starting lineup. However, his return was short-lived.

During the beginning of the match, Burnley went on the offensive and Josh Cullen crossed the ball into the penalty area. Vitinho fell to the ground after being contacted from behind by the Tottenham defender who is currently on loan. VAR became involved and, once the referee Darren Bond reviewed the incident on the sidelines, a penalty kick was given. Reguilón was also shown a red card and Bruun Larsen calmly scored the penalty kick against Mark Flekken.

Ivan Toney’s header went over the goal as Brentford tried to respond. Burnley was relieved when Dara O’Shea made a mistake in a pass back to Muric. The goalkeeper was able to slide and kick the ball off the line, saving a follow-up shot from Toney.

Fofana had a clear opportunity to score from a short distance after being set up by a pass from Lorenz Assignon, but somehow missed. Later, Muric made a great save against Yoane Wissa. Fofana, who had been waiting behind Flekken as he prepared for a kick, tried to steal the ball but was stopped by the goalkeeper.

Charlie Taylor missed a shot over the Brentford goal in the beginning of the second half, but Fofana was able to make up for it in the 62nd minute when he received a pass from Wilson Odobert and scored against Flekken.

Burnley’s push for more included Zeki Amdouni’s shot being held by Flekken, before their lead was halved by Ajer heading in a cross from Shandon Baptiste.

Burnley had been 2-0 up against West Ham only to be held 2-2 and fans may have been fearing a repeat as Muric kept out a Keane Lewis-Potter header.

During an extended stoppage time period, Amdouni was substituted for himself and a goal was scored for Burnley. However, the goal was not counted due to Toney’s foul on Muric.
