Andy Murray secured his most notable victory of the year thus far by defeating Tomás Martín Etcheverry in straight sets at the Miami Open.
Murray easily defeated the 30th-ranked Argentinian, with a score of 7-6 (0) and 6-3, in a match that was interrupted by rain. This victory allowed the 36-year-old Scottish player to make it to the third round, and also served as a form of payback for his previous loss to the same opponent in the opening round of the Australian Open earlier this year.
Murray is set to compete against up-and-coming Czech player, Tomas Machac, in the upcoming round. Machac secured his spot by defeating the 6th ranked Russian, Andrey Rublev.
Nicolás Jarry brought an end to Jack Draper’s challenge. The 23rd-ranked player from Chile defeated the 22-year-old Draper in a 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6 (2) match.
It was a disappointing day for American supporters as three of the highest-ranked male players from the US were eliminated, including the 12th seed Taylor Fritz.
Fritz was accompanied by seeded players Tommy Paul (13th) and Frances Tiafoe (21st) in leaving the tournament, leaving Ben Shelton (No.16) as the top-ranked American player remaining.
Denis Shapovalov delivered an upset, meanwhile, finishing off the 10th seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2, 6-4. Leading 2-1 when play was halted on Friday, the Canadian had his Greek opponent under constant pressure, piling up 18 break opportunities and converting three while Tsitsipas could not manage a single break chance the entire contest.
