Dakota Johnson spoke about the disappointment of the superhero film Madame Web, expressing her doubt in taking on a similar project in the future.
The lead role in Sony’s latest endeavor to expand the Spider-Man franchise was played by the actor, but unfortunately, the result garnered negative critiques and underwhelming financial success. The film received a low 12% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and earned only $91 million globally, despite an estimated budget of $80 million.
When interviewed by Bustle, the actor was inquired about her reaction to “nasty” reviews. She answered, “I am not shocked by how this has occurred.”
According to a Chicago Sun-Times review by Richard Roeper, the movie was described as “one of the worst comic book movies I’ve ever seen,” while Rolling Stone’s David Fear referred to it as “the Cats: The Movie of superhero movies.”
Johnson expressed that their experience was completely new to them. They are unlikely to repeat it since they feel out of place in that environment. They have learned from the experience and acknowledge that in the entertainment industry, projects can change drastically from their initial concept. Despite the negative criticism faced, they empathize with the outcome.
Johnson made a playful remark about the potential depiction of her comments. She used an example such as “Dakota Johnson Speaks Out About Madame Web’s Unsuccessful Box Office Performance.” She clarified that she is not breaking any silence, but simply speaking her mind.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Sony executives were disappointed by the film’s performance and are now looking to their next project, the August release of Kraven the Hunter starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, to create a successful new franchise.
The lackluster reception of Madame Web is the most recent superhero letdown, following lackluster reviews and low viewer interest for Shazam 2, The Marvels, and The Flash.
Johnson’s next project is a two-person drama titled Daddio, where he will star alongside Sean Penn. He is also set to star in Celine Song’s latest film, a romantic comedy called The Materialists, as a follow-up to her previous work Past Lives.
