According to several reports, Jim Beard, the keyboardist for Steely Dan, passed away at the age of 63.
According to a representative, Beard, a musician famous for working with jazz icons like Pat Metheny, John McLaughlin, and Wayne Shorter, passed away in a hospital in New York City on Saturday.
The publication reported that Beard passed away from complications related to an unexpected sickness, according to the spokesperson.
According to his website biography, Beard was born in Ridley Park, Pennsylvania in 1960 and relocated to New York in 1985 in pursuit of his musical aspirations. Throughout his career, he has traveled extensively, performing with numerous musicians worldwide and collaborating with artists from diverse musical genres.
Throughout his professional life, Beard released over 100 pieces that were recorded by notable artists such as McLaughlin and Michael Brecker. His work was also featured in publications like The New Real Book. Apart from his performances with the Metropole Orkest, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Beard also showcased his talent at festivals in the US, Canada, France, the Netherlands, and Japan.
Beard has been recognized with nominations for several Grammy awards for his music productions and compositions. He also contributed as a performer on the Grammy-winning live album Some Skunk Funk in 2007.
According to a report from Deadline, in 2008, Beard became a keyboardist for the rock band Steely Dan in the United States. His final show with the band took place on January 20th in Phoenix, Arizona.
Beard’s legacy lives on through his two kids, Victor and Caitlin, as well as his mother Sarah, brother Bill Beard, and sister Nancy Canale.
Numerous musicians expressed sorrow over the passing of Beard, including jazz percussionist Peter Erskine who stated, “Jim Beard, rest in peace… Jim was the anchor and an invaluable presence on countless projects. I will greatly miss the man, his cleverness, and his musical insight. You made an impact, Jim.”
Antonio Sanchez, a drummer and composer, expressed disbelief at the passing of the great Jim Beard. He described it as an untimely and tragic loss, noting that Jim was not only a gentle soul but also a brilliantly talented artist. Antonio ended by saying that he will miss Jim dearly.
“I am grateful for everything, Jim Beard. You were an inspiration and musical genius to many, including myself. It was an honor to have the opportunity to spend time with you and gain some insight into your talents.”
