According to songwriter Gregg Alexander, the hit song “Murder on the Dancefloor” may not have been created without a car malfunction. In a rare interview with Dave Simpson, Alexander revealed that he wrote the song during a moment of inspiration when he was unable to go out in Detroit. Instead, he picked up his acoustic guitar from the back seat and sang the lyrics “it’s murder on the dancefloor, but you’d better not kill the groove.”

This is one line of the song that was included in Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s final recording. However, several other lines from the demo version, such as “I won’t make us hit the hay!”, did not make the cut. For the first time, you can listen to a portion of the demo here, along with a message from Alexander.

“I have a passion for art, but on the side I also produced music for popular artists like The Strokes and Tina Turner. In interviews, Sophie has mentioned how the 90s demo cassette of the New Radicals’ song “Murder” inspired our new lyrics, instead of my usual dance-murder references, let’s go to The Hague and relax with a joint! Sophie also kindly retweeted covers of “Murder” – my bandmate Danielle [Brisebois] and I decided to share a snippet of the rough demo we sent Sophie, which could have remained a forgotten hit if it weren’t for her belief in the song and her talent as a pop artist. Thank you eternal to Sophie Ellis-Bextor from New Radicals for giving our song a chance to be heard by the world!”
