Chances are, you may not have realized it, but you have likely encountered Bleachers’ music before. The band has been covertly providing backing for recent albums by Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, and St Vincent. This is largely due to frontman Jack Antonoff’s successful career as the most sought-after producer in the industry, having played a key role in many of the defining pop records of the past decade. It’s no surprise that he has won the Grammy for producer of the year three years in a row.

The fourth album from Bleachers has a similar sound to its three previous albums, heavily influenced by fellow New Jersey musician Bruce Springsteen. A notable example is the track “Modern Girl”, with hints of The National on the opener “I Am Right on Time”. Lana Del Rey also makes an appearance on “Alma Mater”, but it fails to leave a lasting impression. The album loses momentum in the middle with lackluster ballads. Although produced well by Antonoff, there is a lack of excitement in songs like the auto-tuned “The Waiter” or the upbeat “Woke Up Today”. While not a bad album, it falls short of being truly captivating.
