Billie Eilish, along with her sibling Finneas O’Connell, was awarded the Academy Award for the top track with their collaboration, What Was I Made For?, composed for the Barbie film’s soundtrack.

Eilish and O’Connell were successful in overcoming a group of competitors, which included a track from the film Barbie: I’m Just Ken, composed by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt and sung by Ryan Gosling. Other entries included Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People) from the movie Killers of the Flower Moon, and It Never Went Away from the documentary American Symphony.

“What Was I Made For?” was a chart-topping hit in both the UK and Australia, and also reached number 14 in the US. The uplifting song is featured in a scene of the film where Margot Robbie’s character Barbie meets the ghost of her creator, portrayed by Rhea Perlman. At the Grammy Awards in February, it received recognition as the best song of the year and for its contribution to visual media.

Eilish expressed her deep gratitude and privilege, dedicating the award to all those impacted by the film and acknowledging its extraordinary impact.

She also thanked her best friend, Zoe, “for playing Barbies with me” as well as two music teachers, one of whom “didn’t like me but you were good at your job”.
