Roy Hodgson expected to step down as Crystal Palace wait to appoint Glasner

Crystal Palace’s manager, Roy Hodgson, is anticipated to resign from his position after being hospitalized on Thursday. It is reported that Oliver Glasner will take over as his replacement.

After experiencing discomfort during a training session, the 76-year-old needed medical attention and had to undergo tests at the hospital. This was prompted by the cancellation of a press conference by Palace.

Hodgson is currently in a stable state but will not be able to participate in Palace’s upcoming match against Everton on Monday. Instead, his assistants Ray Lewington and Paddy McCarthy are expected to lead the team’s preparations.

Palace, whose chairman, Steve Parish, accompanied Hodgson to hospital, are expected to confirm that Hodgson will stand down from his post for the last four months of his contract and be replaced by Glasner.

It is possible that Glasner may be chosen before Monday’s match, but it is unlikely that the 49-year-old, who led Eintracht Frankfurt to their victory in the Europa League in 2022, will assume control at Everton.

Parish favored Glasner as the top choice to take over for Hodgson, whose role as former England manager was heavily scrutinized after Monday night’s loss to Chelsea. It is believed that Parish made the decision for a change due to the club’s struggle with only four wins in 18 league games, placing them in danger of relegation.

An effort to convince Kieran McKenna to depart Ipswich was unsuccessful, however, Glasner – who was highly praised by Palace’s main shareholder John Textor after the latter attempted to appoint him as a replacement for Laurent Blanc at Lyon, another one of his teams – remained a feasible choice since he has been without a job since departing from Frankfurt at the conclusion of last season. He has reached an agreement for a contract valued at approximately £4.5m per season until 2026, with the possibility of an additional year.

Hodgson’s health has been affected before this season. In September, the 76-year-old, who is the oldest manager in Premier League history, was unable to attend Palace’s match against Aston Villa due to being hospitalized on the day of the game.
