Rafael Nadal has decided to pull out of the upcoming Qatar Open, citing his lack of readiness to compete.
The individual who has won 22 grand slam singles titles, but was unable to participate in the Australian Open due to a hip injury, had intended on competing in the ATP 250 tournament in Doha. However, the 37-year-old will now aim to make his comeback in the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells in the following month.
Nadal shared on social media: “I was hoping to participate in the Doha tournament, where the organizers and the incredible Qatar fans have always shown me tremendous support. However, I am not physically prepared to compete at this time and I regret that I will not be able to attend Doha, where I was looking forward to playing once again after my unforgettable victory in 2014.”
“I am determined to continue working hard in order to prepare for the Las Vegas exhibition and the highly anticipated Indian Wells tournament.”
In January, Nadal returned to competitive play at the Brisbane International following a year-long absence due to a lingering hip issue.
During his quarter-final match against Jordan Thompson in Brisbane, the Spaniard suffered a muscle tear near his hip. However, scans showed that the injury was not in the same location as his previous injury.
