Pep Guardiola has nearly eliminated the possibility of Manchester City achieving a consecutive treble, stating that it is highly unlikely, with a 99.99% certainty, that they can accomplish this unprecedented feat in Europe.
Last season, Guardiola’s team became the second English team to achieve a treble, winning the FA Cup and Champions League titles alongside Manchester United’s 1998-99 team. Currently in second place in the Premier League and progressing in both the Cup and Champions League, City has the opportunity to repeat their success, but Guardiola dismissed the idea with a laugh.
“Yeah, seven-tuple [City will do it seven times],” he said. “It’s a fairytale. It’s more complicated than that. Try to beat Everton [on Saturday] and we will see what happens. We have 99.99% possibility that we are not going to win the treble because it has never been done.
The likelihood of repeating this accomplishment is low. If it was simple, another team, like United in the past, would have done it again. What I appreciate is the feeling of triumph during our victory against Luton Town when we were struggling [winning 2-1 after initially being behind in December], or when we defeated Brentford [3-1 last week], which we were unable to do last season.
The team is aware of the challenge ahead and its magnitude. What I appreciate is that we are still in the running and hopefully, we maintain this determination in March and April to compete for championships in May. That is our goal.
According to Guardiola, Jack Grealish has not been in the starting lineup for the last four games. The Manchester City manager stated that the English player is working towards reaching his peak performance. He also mentioned that Grealish is facing tough competition from other skilled players and needs to regain his form from the previous season.
When asked about Grealish’s improvement, Guardiola replied that he should just be true to himself. The manager expressed his satisfaction with his players and believes that Grealish’s progress is not a concern but rather a positive. He also emphasized the importance of Grealish to the team and is eagerly awaiting his return to top form, giving him ample playing time.
