On Friday, Bayer Leverkusen defeated Mainz 2-1, extending their unbeaten streak to 33 games across all competitions and securing an 11 point lead at the top of the league. This marks a new record for any Bundesliga team.

The Bundesliga leaders went in front with Granit Xhaka’s stunning effort from 20 yards out in the third minute but it was short-lived with Dominik Kohr’s diving header just five minutes later levelling things for Mainz.

During the first half, Leverkusen had control of the ball, but Mainz goalkeeper Robin Zentner prevented multiple attempts at scoring and helped keep the visitors in the game. However, in the 68th minute, Zentner allowed a weak shot from Robert Andrich to slip through his hands, giving the hosts the lead once again.

Mainz was reduced to 10 players after Jessic Ngankam was shown a red card for committing a foul on Xhaka. Xabi Alonso’s team, who broke Bayern Munich’s record of 32 consecutive undefeated matches, currently has 61 points. In second place, Bayern has 50 points and will play against RB Leipzig on Saturday.
