Former manager of Eintracht Frankfurt, Oliver Glasner, is poised to step in if the decision to let go of Roy Hodgson is made, as the mounting pressure on the 76-year-old persists.
Hodgson’s role is reportedly facing increased scrutiny following the loss to Chelsea on Monday. Some members of the board may have anticipated that the 3-1 defeat against Mauricio Pochettino’s team would mark the end of the former England manager’s tenure.
However, even though the veteran’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, Palace chairman Steve Parish has reportedly come to the realization that a change is necessary. This comes after a string of only four wins in 18 league games, causing the club to be in danger of relegation.
Efforts to convince Kieran McKenna to assume the role were unsuccessful, as it is believed that the Ipswich manager is not willing to leave while his team is competing for promotion in the Championship. Palace has instead chosen to approach Glasner, who has been without a job since departing from Frankfurt last season.
The 49-year-old ex-defender, who was in charge of the German team when they won the Europa League in 2022 by beating West Ham in the semi-finals, had previously managed Wolfsburg for two seasons after gaining recognition with Linz in Austria.
It is rumored that he has had discussions with the sporting director of Palace, Dougie Freedman, in the past few days and is prepared to step in if Hodgson is fired. Agreement has not yet been reached on the details of a potential deal, but Glasner appears interested in taking on a new role. He has also been linked to a potential move to Bayern Munich, but declined the opportunity to become the manager of French club Lyon earlier this year.
Hodgson is anticipated to lead the team for their upcoming match at Goodison Park on Monday. However, it is uncertain if he will still be in charge for the following game against Burnley at Selhurst Park five days later, as Palace has not won at Goodison Park since September 2014.
It is believed that palace officials are worried about the increasing possibility of being demoted, especially after spending more money in the January transfer window than any other Premier League team.
During the televised match against Chelsea, a group of fans at Selhurst displayed banners criticizing the ownership for creating a “weak club culture and direction.” These banners were not well received by the boardroom, especially since similar ones had been shown during the 4-1 loss to Brighton (Palace’s arch-rivals) and the 5-0 defeat at Arsenal.
It is anticipated that Palace will not have their captain, Marc Guehi, as well as Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise for the match against Everton, who are trailing by five points in the relegation zone.
