Ajla Tomljanović had to take a break from playing due to a surgery she had to remove non-cancerous growths from her uterus.

The Australian tennis player is making a comeback after a tumultuous 2023 season filled with injuries. However, she recently announced that she will be taking a break from her career for a few weeks to undergo surgery for uterine fibroids.

Tomljanović shared the news on her Instagram account, accompanied by a photo of her smiling while lying in a hospital bed.

“Regrettably, I will not be participating in any competitions for the next few weeks. I was eagerly anticipating the upcoming hard court tournaments,” she stated.

“I recently underwent a procedure to have uterine fibroids removed and am currently recovering at home. I will return to my usual activities soon.”

The right-handed player from Croatia shared a link in her post for more details about uterine fibroids, stating that it was intended for both women and men who are interested in learning more.

In 2022, Tomljanović made it to the quarter-finals at both Wimbledon and the US Open. However, in 2023, she faced a series of injuries and illnesses that greatly affected her performance and resulted in a shortened season.

Last year, the 30-year-old resumed playing and made it to the second round of the Australian Open, where she was defeated by 11th seed Jelena Ostapenko in three sets.

Tomljanović expressed that she should be upset, but she remained calm as she did not feel like she had made a major mistake during her loss at Melbourne Park.

“When I reflect on the past 12 months, I feel fortunate to be in the present.”

Tomljanović competed in the Thailand Open last month, but lost to Hungarian qualifier Dalma Galfi in two consecutive sets.

Last year in April, the individual ranked as world No 221 achieved the highest singles ranking of No 32 before undergoing surgery to address a knee problem.

Tomljanović spoke at the Australian Open about the uncertainty of knee injuries and the need to adapt one’s approach to their career due to this unpredictability.

At the age of 30, your body goes through changes and it’s unpredictable how it will respond. This led to some difficult times.

Top tennis players from all over the world expressed their support for Tomljanović on Instagram after she shared details of her surgery.

“Even on the day of her surgery, former Australian Open finalist Jennifer Brady maintained her flawless appearance.”

“Sending well wishes for a speedy recovery. Looking forward to seeing you again soon,” shared Matt Ebden, the winner of the doubles championship at the Australian Open.

“Hope you feel better soon, Ajla!” commented four-time grand slam champion Kim Clijsters.
