A representative from the United States has ridiculed Russian president Vladimir Putin’s present of a Russian vehicle to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, while also accusing Moscow of disregarding UN resolutions.
On Tuesday, state media from North Korea reported that Kim received a vehicle from Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, for his own personal use.
The present was verified by Kremlin representative Dmitry Peskov, who stated that it was an Aurus, a high-end vehicle similar to the ones preferred by Putin.
According to Peskov, when the leader of North Korea visited the Vostochny cosmodrome, he was shown a car by Putin himself. Like many others, Kim was impressed by the vehicle.
According to Peskov, the decision was finalized to develop relations with all neighboring countries, including North Korea, as they are a close neighbor of ours.
When questioned about the present, the spokesperson for the state department, Matthew Miller, informed reporters in Washington on Wednesday, “To be honest, I was unaware that there existed a Russian luxury car.”
He made a joke saying, “I hope Kim purchased the extended warranty.” He expressed doubt about Russia being the ideal location for buying a luxury car.
According to the Korean Central News Agency, Kim Yo-jong, the influential sister of Kim, stated that the “present showcases the strong personal bond between the highest leaders.”
The relationship between Russia and North Korea has strengthened following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In September, Kim and Putin met in the far east region of Russia.
Officials from the United States and South Korea claim that Russia, a historically dominant military force, has resorted to obtaining weapons and supplies from North Korea and Iran due to a pressing need to restock its arsenal.
Reiterating a previous declaration made by South Korea, the United States stated that the present would violate a UN Security Council prohibition on supplying luxurious items to North Korea, a country that has persistently conducted nuclear and missile experiments in defiance.
Miller stated that if this is accurate, it would seem that Russia is once again disregarding UN security council resolutions that it had previously endorsed.
The Lada, a well-known car in Russia, was often made fun of in the West during the cold war because of its basic and practical design. Its extremely low cost appealed to drivers on a budget outside of the Soviet bloc.
Renault, a company based in France, assisted in giving the car a new look. After the Ukraine invasion, they gave up their 68% ownership in Lada’s company AvtoVAZ and transferred the assets to Moscow.
