Police have announced that a woman has been detained on suspicion of murder following the discovery of three deceased children at a residence in Bristol.

On Sunday, Avon and Somerset police reported that they found something during a welfare check at Blaise Walk in Sea Mills at 12:40am. Sadly, three children were found deceased at the location. The alleged perpetrator, a 42-year-old, is currently being held by police at a hospital.

The IOPC was notified by the force about the incident due to prior police involvement in February.

A representative from the IOPC stated that they were informed this afternoon about a sorrowful occurrence in Bristol by the Avon and Somerset authorities. They were also informed that there had been previous police interaction earlier this month.

“We have asked for a written referral that includes more details about the previous interaction. Once we receive it, we will review it to decide if any further steps are needed on our part.”

Vicks Hayward-Melen, the local chief inspector, expressed deep sadness over a tragic incident that resulted in the loss of three children. He extended his heartfelt sympathies to the families of the children and assured that our family liaison unit will provide them with necessary support.

We think this is a one-time occurrence and there is no additional danger to the general public. Nonetheless, police will continue to be present at the location to offer comfort to anyone with inquiries or worries.

“In the next few days, there will be a higher number of police officers visible in the area. We appreciate the cooperation of the residents during this period.”

Investigators from the primary homicide unit are examining the fatalities.

Darren Jones, the MP for Bristol North West, wrote on X: “I’m deeply saddened by this tragic news from Sea Mills today. My thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family of the children, and my thanks go to our emergency services who responded.

Law enforcement will continue to be present in the vicinity, but they view this as a singular event.

The mayor of Bristol, Marvin Rees, posted on X: “I am at a loss for words to express the heart-wrenching news from Sea Mills, Bristol this afternoon.”

I am sending my condolences to those who were acquainted with these three young children. We will collaborate with schools, the community, and law enforcement to provide assistance to those affected.
