The reception of Jennifer Lopez’s latest album, her first in ten years, will be determined by your level of interest in the rekindling of her relationship with actor Ben Affleck, also known as Bennifer. This album, a follow-up to 2002’s This Is Me… Then which was released during their initial engagement (they separated in 2004), showcases their reconciliation, marriage, and intimate moments with explicit descriptions (and even a corresponding film).
The sweet Mad in Love (“Being with you is like paradise/ And the wait was worth it”) is possibly the lowest point, while the energetic Midnight Trip to Vegas, which includes a sample of Chris Isaak’s emotional ballad Wicked Game, delves into the details of her and Affleck’s “crazy” and “simple” wedding. On the lead single Can’t Get Enough, which Lopez performed at said wedding, sex is compared to a car’s maintenance (“you got my engine runnin'”, “you got me accelerated”, etc). There are enjoyable moments of reminiscence: the hit Hearts and Flowers mentions Jenny from the Block, while the fantastic Rebound is reminiscent of classic R&B with the addition of a fluttering harp. However, songs like To Be Yours and Not.going.anywhere offer little beyond being a soundtrack for a cozy night in with Bennifer.
