Katherine Priddy states that her second album is difficult, following the success of her debut album, The Eternal Rocks Beneath. However, despite her struggles as a singer-songwriter from Birmingham, her exceptional voice and composed delivery shine through in her songs. The accompaniments of guitars, cello, violin, brass, and synth, overseen by producer Simon Weaver, add depth to her music. Unlike her previous album, this record may not have the same striking imagery as songs like Wolf and Icarus.

The creation known as The Pendulum Swing is more consistent and relatable, with its title alluding to the desire to leave and change, and the counterforce pulling one back to their familiar surroundings. This concept is evident in tracks such as First House on the Left, where Priddy reflects on a “boat made of old bricks and mortar”, and in songs dedicated to family, like Father of Two and Walnut Shell. The theme of arrival and departure is also present in several love songs. Although the title Does She Hold You Like I Did could suggest a bitter country tune, its heartache is expressed delicately and eloquently. Similarly, Anyway, Always and Words of Mine showcase subtle complexity. Overall, The Pendulum Swing is a deep and contemplative work.
