The initial song on Brittany Howard’s second solo album, titled “arth Sign,” sets the tone for the rest of the record in a way that is often difficult for ordinary people to achieve – with an uplifting burst of hope enhanced by intricate vocal harmonies, jazz-inspired percussion, and unique instrumentation. The album continues to impress with its exceptional quality, tackling the theme of love with honesty and sincerity while maintaining flawless musical execution.
Howard rose to fame as the lead singer of Alabama Shakes, receiving numerous Grammy awards. In 2019, she released her debut solo album, Jaime, which also garnered critical acclaim. During the pandemic, Howard took the opportunity to reset and establish a home studio. She experimented with unconventional objects such as bin lids and cutlery to create unique sounds. Her latest album, What Now, features songs about fading love, new beginnings, and Howard’s tendency to overlook warning signs in relationships. The tracks are tied together by the use of singing bowls throughout. Howard’s vocal range is showcased as she effortlessly transitions between dancefloor hits like “Prove It to You,” soulful melodies, and funky beats. The standout track, “Power to Undo,” not only pays homage to Prince but also captures his essence. It’s difficult to pinpoint what stands out the most – the delicate trumpet of Rod McGaha, Howard’s impressive guitar skills, or her striking vocal performance on “Every Color in Blue.”
