Killer Mike, an American rapper, has issued a statement following his detention at the Grammys.
At 48 years old, he defeated well-known artists including Travis Scott, Nas, Drake, and 21 Savage to claim the award for best rap album. Additionally, his song Scientists & Engineers earned him two more awards for best rap song and best rap performance. However, soon after his victories, he was seen being taken away in handcuffs from the Crypto.com Arena in LA where the awards ceremony was taking place.
The Los Angeles police department announced that he was apprehended and processed for a minor battery offense, and was subsequently released.
According to an unidentified official from law enforcement who spoke with Rolling Stone, a security guard stated that Killer Mike reportedly pushed her to the ground while attempting to pass her at the entrance of a venue.
After the event, rapper Killer Mike, also known as Michael Render, explained to Rolling Stone: “Due to the chaos and multiple entrances, my team and I were unsure of which door to use. We encountered an overly aggressive security guard, but we are confident that I will be cleared of any wrongdoing.”
A member of the rapper’s crew stated: “We encountered a problem when Mike was detained and charged with a minor offense after receiving his awards. There was a lot of confusion about where to go when entering the venue. He encountered an overly aggressive security guard but kept moving towards his intended destination. While the situation has been exaggerated, we believe that once all the details are revealed, it will be shown that Mike did not commit the alleged offense and he will be proven innocent.”
Regarding his victories, Render commented, “We are extremely proud and are reveling in this moment.”
In addition to his individual music journey, which began with featuring on Outkast’s song “Snappin’ & Trappin'” in 2000, Render is recognized for his partnership with Run the Jewels, a group that has put out four full-length albums.
