Football Daily | Manchester United, football’s very own version of Squid Game

Estimated read time 5 min read

Is the light red?

During Sir Alex Ferguson’s tenure at Manchester United, a common belief in football was that when a player leaves Old Trafford, their career would inevitably decline. However, this belief was challenged by Gerard Piqué, who went from Manchester United reserves to one of the greatest club teams ever. When Ferguson retired in 2013, this belief was reversed – now, entering Old Trafford could lead to a downward spiral into the Bermuda Triangle of football careers. Players like Morgan Schneiderlin, Mason Mount, Anthony Martial, and Jadon Sancho, who have the potential to be world-class, have instead become victims of what could be considered football’s version of the game “Squid Game”. Given United’s transfer policies and wage structure, it could even be called “Quid Game”.

The comparison is not entirely accurate as most of the players are able to leave eventually. However, the last known sighting of Donny van de Beek was him running past Lou Macari’s Fish & Chip Shop, singing along to Yazz & The Plastic Population. In most situations, only the physical bodies are able to escape from the deteriorating place once known as the Theatre of Dreams. The spirits and skill of the players remain trapped within Old Trafford. [Could this be seen as more similar to Twin Peaks rather than Squid Game? – Football Daily Editor]

Sancho’s disappearance at Old Trafford is one of the most disheartening and frustrating events. During his time at Borussia Dortmund, he was not only a successful Fantasy Football player but also a dream player for fantasy football enthusiasts, consistently delivering goals and assists with effortless grace. Although he has shown glimpses of his undeniable talent at United, his standout performance against Liverpool, where he outwitted half of their team, was the highlight of Erik ten Hag’s initially promising tenure. However, following their public feud after the Arsenal game in August, there seems to be no communication between Sancho and Ten Hag, and it appears that he will be returning to Dortmund on a loan. In the past, going back to a previous club and leaving Old Trafford would have been seen as a violation of two key beliefs – never return and leaving Old Trafford only leads to downfall. However, in this case, it seems like the wiser choice.

The likelihood of Sancho returning to Old Trafford hinges on whether Ten Hag receives a potential P45 in the near future. The manager of Manchester United in the upcoming summer will likely have less influence in selecting new players for the 2024-25 Quid Game. According to recent news, Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s group of project managers are looking to sign Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise as one of their first acquisitions in the summer. Olise fits the mold of a modern United signing, as he was available for half the price last August. He is also a talented player who meets both the requirements of reality and fantasy. He would be an ideal replacement for Antony, Sancho, and Mason Greenwood on the right wing. In fact, United may need him more than he needs them. The allure of Old Trafford is always present – regardless of how many careers have suffered, any target knows that being part of the next league-winning team will guarantee them legendary status at United. Furthermore, with Sir Jim and Sir Dave at the helm, this time United means business and knows what they are doing. Will things finally be different this time? Only time will tell.

“Today’s quote is:”

“Quote of the day:”

“I personally spoke with him and expressed our apologies on behalf of the club. It is understandable that he is still feeling angry and upset. No player should ever have to endure such abuse and we deeply regret that he had to experience it. We will do everything in our power to identify the perpetrator and take appropriate action. This behavior is extremely disappointing and we implore our fans to stop and act with proper conduct. This cannot continue.” – Nigel Clibbens, chief executive of Carlisle, strongly condemns the fan who verbally attacked Port Vale’s goalkeeper, Connor Ripley, by telling him to take his own life during the League One match at Brunton Park on New Year’s Day.

FOOTBALL DAILY LETTERS

Regarding yesterday’s Football Daily, Antony Train, a Villa fan, expressed his desire for Frank Lampard to manage Birmingham City in 2024.

Regarding yesterday’s Quote of the Day, I have a slight advantage over Jürgen Klopp in terms of business on the sidelines. Like him, I have lost some weight since getting married, putting my wedding ring at risk of getting lost during a match. However, unlike him, I anticipated this risk and make sure to leave my ring at home when coaching. If we could have professional TV camera staff on standby to retrieve the ring if it were to get lost, I would be open to wearing it on match days in the Nottinghamshire U-18s Saturday League (Division 4) – David Ede.

Mick Beeby asks why Klopp’s cameraman has a donkey’s head under his right arm in the photo for Quote of the Day.
