The sci-fi thriller The Mothership, led by Halle Berry, will not be released as Netflix has chosen to halt post-production.
The movie “The Mothership” was supposed to come out in 2022, but after facing several delays, it has been canceled altogether. It was originally filmed in 2021 and a short preview was included in a trailer for the streaming platform’s major releases of the year. This information was reported by Variety.
According to The Wrap’s sources, the decision was not made easily. The movie supposedly needed major reshoots, which would have been costly and challenging due to the aging of the child actors.
Matthew Charman, a British Oscar nominee, wrote and directed this film. He is also known for co-writing the script for Steven Spielberg’s 2015 drama, Bridge of Spies, and the romantic film Suite Francaise starring Michelle Williams.
Other movies that have been scrapped in a similar manner include Batgirl, a DC adventure that had a budget of $90 million and was cancelled during post-production, and Coyote vs Acme, which was completed but not released due to Warner Bros. taking a tax write-down. The latter, a movie featuring both live-action and animation and starring John Cena, has been put up for sale since then.
Netflix chose not to debut two finished movies, The Inheritance and House/Wife, last year. However, they did give permission to the creators to seek other distribution options.
During the past week, Netflix released their Q4 report which surpassed expectations by gaining over 13 million new subscribers. The streaming service also excelled during the unveiling of this year’s Oscar nominations, receiving a total of 18 nominations.
The Mothership starred Oscar-winner Berry as a single mother who finds an extraterrestrial object on her farm. Berry has worked with Netflix before on the release of Bruised, her directorial debut, and will next be seen in the streamer’s action thriller The Union alongside Mark Wahlberg.
There has been no official statement from either Berry or Netflix.
