Elton John has achieved the status of being an Egot recipient, having won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony award. He recently won his first Emmy, making him one of only 19 people to accomplish this feat.

The award for best live variety special at the Los Angeles awards ceremony on Monday night went to Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium. However, the 76-year-old British singer-songwriter was unable to accept the honor as he was recovering from knee surgery.

Ben Winston, the producer, accepted the award on behalf of Elton John, who was unable to attend due to a knee operation. He expressed gratitude to the Television Academy for the prestigious award and conveyed Elton’s love and appreciation.

“We knew this show would be historic, because it was going to be Elton’s last ever show in North America on tour. We knew it would be historic because it was Disney’s first live global stream.

“We were unaware of the historical significance of this event, as it resulted in the recognition of a man who has shaped the soundtrack of our lives and made significant contributions to society. He is a hero to all of us. We did not anticipate that it would earn him an Egot.”

Rephrasing: Achieving the status of an Egot has been compared to winning the “grand slam” in show business. John is the 19th person to accomplish this feat, along with notable names such as Audrey Hepburn, Mel Brooks, and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Prior to John, Viola Davis was the most recent person to join the Egot club, earning a Grammy award last year.

John’s collection of awards now includes an Emmy, in addition to his five Grammys. He also has two Academy Awards for his songs “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from The Lion King and “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from Rocketman. He also has a Tony award for his musical Aida.
